Still working on putting up last year's find I got this odd pair. Where they were given to me I'm not sure as the last three weeks in December were kind of a blur.
The first is an Australian cent from 1973 in remarkably good shape about 17.51mm with a young queen.
The second is an East Caribbean States ten cents from 2000 in spotty condition about 18.10mm with a young queen.
Both weigh 2.60grams. This fact makes them feel almost identical in hand.
The reverse of the Australian coin has a feather-tailed glider which is one of the world's smallest gliding marsupials.
The reverse of the East Caribbean States coin has Sir Francis Drake's ship the Golden Hind. I think he liked puns.
Apparently by the 1991 all the 1 and 2 cent Australian coins were taken out of circulation and melted for Olympic Bronze medals and for normal metal recovery.

ReplyDeleteI've got a whole bunch of old coins from the early 20th century and English Pennys from 1892, 1897, 1896, 1920, 1876, 1890, 1936, 1921, 1863, 1884, 1906, 1860, 1868, 1861 and five or six more which are too faded to read a date on. I have francs galore from the 1930s and 40s, I have English three pence from 1937 and 1945, plus one from 1921 that is so tiny it fits on top of my thumbnail. I have a three coins from the WW2 era Germany...(I know it's not spelled right), a shilling each from 1926, 1941 and 1940, a half penny from 1938 and 1944 and 1932, a florin each from 1933, 1935 and a half crown coin from 1939.
ReplyDeleteHow do I sell these off...I half slightly less than NO interest in them and I got them when my mother died. Apparently they came with the rest of the estate.
There's also one with a harp on one side and a sow with a litter of piglets on the other that says 1935.

ReplyDeleteThis is a Kweichow Province Pattern Coin from China.
Looks like 1 dollar if real it would be worth thousands.
The problem is that many fakes exist and yours looks like a cast fake.

ReplyDeleteCast coins are really easy to spot because or large die cracks and smaller bubbles of metal.
But newer fakes are nearly impossible to tell by local dealers and experts are sometime needed.
OK, I may bring it to my local coin dealer, but I'm not worried about it because I only bought two of these for $1 each. The other one is different one and on the reverse side, it says in English, 420 Grains Trade Dollar 900 Fine with a weird montage of monsters where my maze is on the other and the top half of around the rim is chinese writing. the other side is a big wreath all around like an indian head penny but where the union shield would be is a flower and in the middle were one cent on the indian head cent are two symbols on top of each other, a line on top and a box underneath with inside the box a box on top of a 3 category box with two lines like legs sticking out. If you need pictures, I can get you some tommorow.

ReplyDeleteThis is a Japanese Pattern coin from 1874 again but I can't be sure.
If real again this would be worth thousands but there are so many varieties both real and fake that it should be seeen by an expert.
Some are real and only worth $20.00 but I'm not a Japanese coin exxoert and the few pictures I have are very blurry. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Is it true that there are counterfeit $10 bills in the world that are worth more than ten bucks? A history teacher told us of some guy who made numerous and the only way to tell was a light on in the whitehouse. Wondering how true this is. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteYes some fakes were made so well or are from a famous faker and are worth more than face value to some collectors. Although legally there may be problems.
