The technical history of coins can easily be traced. The design, metal, and location is something that every society kept extensive records. Even when records are lost modern science can tell what base metals or minting techniques were used. What is often forgotten is the practical use history.
Take the U.S. half dollar since 2001 none have officially been released for circulation. While seldom seen many people still find these modern halves in their change and even more get them from banks and use them in stores. Not to mention casino use.
The British Virgin Islands coins have a similar history. Their official currency is the U.S. Dollar but the Franklin Mint issues all of their "other" coins.
Here is where the history gets sketchy. In 1973 and 1974 I think they issued coins for circulation...or were they? Averaging 15,000 coins the first two years they dropped off to less than 1,000 for the years afterward. Did some people actually use them? Were they intended for locals or tourist like the Cuban two-coin system?
Well I would need several dozens first hand experience stories for a somewhat complete picture. Remembering that if you ask a dozen Americans if $2 bills are still made and used 11 out of 12 will say no and they would be wrong.
A second shot to show the mirror field and the frosty Queen given it that nice cameo effect.
Never finding any British Virgin Islands coins in my change these slightly hazy coins are from that lot I bought a long time back. I really like the pair of birds, they did this on most of these lower denomination coins. After 1985 they completely stopped making these coins and focused on high denomination issues. In 1996 and 1997 reports of $500 dollar coin and others became unclear. From 2002 to present they just pump out low mintage commemorative coins.

The coin books did not list the weight for non-silver version of these coins I used my digital scale to get the weight. The silver versions weighed more but were only made in 1977.

ReplyDeleteI bought 5 $25 BVI 1992 silver coins. The Krause catalog lists 28 versions produced for this year, KM#104-KM#131 and lists the weight of each version as 21.54g . However, each of my 5 are different versions and vary from 21.54 by up to half a gram on a scale sensitive to .05 g. As you probably know, they were made by Franklin Mint. They exhibit a slight diamagnetism to a very strong, large rare earth magnet, that is, they are repulsed by it slightly, which i have not seen with sterling before. Could they be genuine? the planchets, I thought, would be absolutely identical, so that the weight would be identical. They look just fine under magnification. thanks, Jason

ReplyDeleteThe tolerance for a coin this size is about 0.9 grams which if yours varies 0.5 grams then it is acceptable.
As for the magnetism this happens to all coins overtime due to magnetic fields and oxidation.
Which may also explain the weight issues.
As far as I know these coins were never faked due to there low values. The Franklin Mint has has issues withe there purity for silver coins but none of this sounds suspicious.
hmm.....of course i have encountered many thousands of average circulated coins which have lost weight through circulation, but I have never encountered an uncirculated coin, especially a BU proof that had gained or lost weight. the diamagnetism is quite possible for a few reasons. One, if FM used Argentium sterling, the germanium which composes 1.2%(?) of that alloy is quite diamagnetic, and certainly would be detected by a magnet as powerful as mine. Now, I had not considered the fact that a private mint would have a far wider weight tolerance than a government mint, especially when stamping legal tender non-circulating. Can you suggest any sort of test that would be absolutely conclusive? Thanks very much for your help; several other sources (FM, BVI govt, BVI Public Library) were unresponsive. Jason

ReplyDeleteI have encountered proof coins from the Franklin Mint that have a gram or more difference from the book weight. The two pictured above are examples.
To test for purity of your coins would go beyond what any jeweler or collector can do.
Possibly a local college can do mass spectrometer test but they would destroy the coin.

In the Specimen set they are all Copper-Nickel, these are both Uncirculted and Matte sets.
Only in the Proof sets are they silver, Proof has a mirror finish.
I can only guess to save money they used the same COA for all sets.
the 1973 unc specimen set does come with a .7643 ozt silver dollar. I have it here. also it says so in a few places on the COA. It was the first year of issue. I don't think they started the Cop-Nickel dollar till 1974.

ReplyDeleteFor 1973 true along with the Proof set those were special First issue sets, came in different packaging and were very common. But your 1975 is just copper-nickel.

Becuase face value is not considered when talking about collectible coins.
Granted with the BVI coins the curency exchagne rate is equal to the face value no coin dealer would ever pay that for a 50% gold coin.
Currently on ebay "cook island $50" are going for about $40 which is a bit high but still not face value.

Aside from being made at the Franklin Mint I do not know the mintage but it seems fairly common. This one is a set of 25 different silver coins issued in 1992.

ReplyDeleteSame value, the thing is he said each coin was "in 99.99% condition" which I took to be PF-69 or near perfect. So most of the value went to grade.
Each coin is 0.725oz of 92.5% silver, which is currently about $21.00 of silver alone.
Collectors value has not changed so if graded to PF-69 it's still $60.00.

I have 2 coins I'd love to know the value of. 1 is a 1975 British Virgin Islands $100 gold coin. It's in a box from the Franklin mint, it has a picture of Queen Elizabeth II on 1 side and some kind of bird on the other. It's in a blue Franklin Mint velvet box and the certificate says it contains 7.10 grams of 900/1000 fine gold.

One side has QEII, the other side says Bicentenary, return to england from second voyage. It has a picture of ship and James Cook on one side and George III on the other.

1,294 were minted.
1st of minting adds no extra value about $80.00.
eBay prices are not realistic unless the auction was already completed.
Hi, hopefully this is still active. According to en-numista 1974 copper nickel $1 is 24.9 grams but I have an AU coin that only weighs 21.9 grams - do you know if fake or possible mint error. Thanks.
