Singapore Twenty Cents

Do you have a coin from Singapore and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I've never been to Singapore and probably couldn't find it on a blank map but every few years I get change from this country.

Singapore coins pre-1985 were all about the fish, scorpion fish to swordfish to seahorses. Then in 1985 they switched to flower designs. I'm not exactly sure why but I suspect it has to due with overfishing, land reclamation, and pollution. They have a good forest program and can always keep plants alive even in small numbers.

The obverse has Singapore's national arms with a lion and a tiger, although lions are not native it symbolizes the old guard. A ribbon that says "Majulah Singapura",or "Onward Singapore" in Malay. Singapore is written in all four official languages, Malay, Chinese, English, and Tamil.

On the reverse is a native powder puff plant that would be pink and all fluffy in real life.

In 2003 Singapore joined a long list of countries that stopped issuing one cent and five cents coins. This is a main reason most of my Singapore finds have been ten cents or higher.

Here's the stats for this coin...
Type/Country: 20 Cents / Singapore
Year: 1993
Mintage: 24,998,000
Metal: Copper-Nickel
Value: $0.15 in VF

Passes as a nickel although slightly lighter and little wider.

    it is a square coin
it has a picture of king george V on one side
it is issued by the Currencies of the Board of Commissioners of Currency, Malaya

  39. 1 cent coin is 1920...Malaya

Still not listed. The only picture I see is of a 1/2 cent coin from the 1940s.

In 1920 Currencies of the Board of Commissioners of Currency, Malaya did not exist.
They started issuing coins in 1939 so your year is not correct.

If this was a 1920 coin it would say Straits Settlements.

but the year stated on the coin is 1920

This is a coin must be from the Straits Settlements. It would be about $0.50.

I'm still not 100% since there is some confusion with your description. Maybe post a picture somewhere and the drop a link here.

In general these square coins from the 1920s are low value.

  42. Today I received a 1991 20 cent Singapore coin in place of a nickel. At first I thought it was annoying, but decided it would join the "club" of unuseable (in the US) coins I have garnered throught the years. When it caught my curiosity later in the day - and saw it may be acutally worth 20 US cents - I smirked - and then tossed it back into the can... For those who understand - it reminds me of "Greek Quarters" that used to cost about 3-5 cents each and worked great as 25 cents in vending machines/toll booths, etc. - but alas ... :)

Sounds damaged, since metal flows easily people can spoon the edges to reshape the coin.

The fact that the lettering is visible under the extended rim shows that this is not a mint error but some type of damage.

If you still suspect something different then post pictures online and link them here and to coin forums to get more than one opinion.

--About $12.00 these are Legal Tender Notes or United States Notes. In 1878 Congress set a limited amount of notes to be circulated and that amount would never be exceeded making them traceable and special enough to have their own value. Legally it would be acceptable as payment even though there was nothing but the law to back them up. As gold notes came into production these notes lost value and were eventually phased out. Although they are still legal to use.

--If you need the money go ahead.

will coins appreciate or are their value set in stone?
--Coins go up and down in value all day long. Over the years most coins gain value but sometimes the lose value.

Also, do you know someone who does what you do except with records?
--Not sure what you mean but there are plenty of coin books and magazines that have printed values with pictures.

Oh, not that I know of.
There are some record forums but I usually use eBay if I want to get record values or stop by a book store and check the record-price guides.

    Sorry for the confusion.

  188. So someone gave me some coins, I know better than to clean my old foreign change but they gave me some cool coins that they had cleaned with brasso (A brass cleaner), did this kill the value? they are only worth a couple bucks a piece at most. a 1936 english penny and a Federation of Nigeria 1959 Penny being the only ones of mention. I already told her that she shouldn't clean her coins like that cause chemical damage makes a collectible coin essentially worthless. Three coins she didn't clean that I would like to know the value of, a 1969 Kenyan one shilling in awesome shape, A 1957 five fen (chinese?) coin, and a Tunesian 1960 Five Millim coin in pretty good shape.
