I'm still here answering questions just not posting much. Apparently getting a master (or is it masters) in engineering is proving tougher than I expected.

ReplyDeleteRecently I found a silver 2008 Canadian nickel with an irregular copper pattern covering slightly under half of both sides and the edge of the coin. The copper part is almost identical in color to the new shiny Canadian penny. In parts of the copper portion the borders seem to blend into the silver, while in other areas the border is clearer. I'm wondering if this is a genuine error coin, or if someone was having a go at home electroplating, and if it is a genuine error, how much it may be worth. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteSounds like improper annealing, the coin is made of steel, copper, and nickel so it may be a mixing error.
This is a fairly new error and haven't seen anything about these types go for about $175.00 if graded in MS-60.
The only way to make sure is have it graded or ask the grading companies if others have submitted this error.

I would need to see the entire back even if damaged because the front tells me nothing.
That said a damaged coin usually only has metal value.

ReplyDeleteIt's from Hong Kong about $2.20 only for the silver content.
Although in fine undamaged it is about $2.50, so no major loss.

ReplyDeleteI cannot tell if they are fake only someone in hand can tell, that said they look real.
1862 Lucy Pickens $1 is about $150.00
1864 $5 is about $50.00 but value changes by signatures and I do not recognize these signatures.
