Obsolete African Coin

Do you have an African coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I bought this coin recently and was very pleased that it was only a few bucks plus free shipping and handling. Another good thing is it's great luster.

Older African coin(Obverse)
Older African coin(Reverse)

Here's the stats for this coin...
Type/Country: 20 Centavos / Mozambique
Year: 1974
Mintages: 13,044,000
Metal: Bronze
Value: $3.75 in XF, $9.00 in UNC

I'm not sure if it is XF or UNC it is sharp in all details but it is terribly spotted.

This coin was issued when Mozambique was under Portuguese control since then the country is now self-ruled. Most Portuguese colonial coins are worth alot more then face.

  1. My parents were antique dealers during my childhood, and I ended up with some coins in my possession (Not sure how... I was very young, so who knows!)

I have a 1947 coin that says "Republica Portuguesa" on the obverse with a ship. On the reverse is some sort of shield and "2 $ 50"

I also have 10 cents Canadian from 1913, six pence from 1954, 10 cents Hong Kong from 1949, and five cents Hong Kong from 1949.

Does these have any value? Sorry for listing so many...

This coin has been officially moved to the Saint Thomas & Prince Island category but I still think of it as a Mozambique coin.

    It's about $10.00.

  25. I received the coin in your post from a stamp/coin company. the Mozambique protugese republic 20 centavoas 1974. They want to sell it to me for $5.95. Its in really good condition ... So I have two questions:
    1. Is it worth the price?
2.how can i tell if its uncirculated? it looks almost new, clear and shiny
    THanks

    ReplyDelete
  26. So I have two questions:
    1. Is it worth the price?
--At $5.95 it is a bit expensive especially if you are an eBay expert.
    $3.75 in XF
    $9.00 in UNC
So even if your is somewhere in the middle it maybe good to buy it now.

2.how can i tell if its uncirculated? it looks almost new, clear and shiny
--Is the tiny details clear, luster is good, few spots, no damage or scratch marks. No evidence of being cleaned.
Many of these survived in high grade so it is not uncommon to find whole rolls in uncirculated.

I think this is the same company that sold me this one. I bought it because at the time I did not buy much online and it was the cool but I quickly canceled all future shipments.
Since 2002 the value has not increased so I do not expect it to go up for another 5-10 years.

If you can afford it and do not want to hunt online go for it. But if you have any doubts just send it back.
