My Australian Coins

Do you have an Australian coin and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

Let's celebrate Australia.

Here are some coins I got from my change over the years. I also received a few in coin lots that I bought. Most were given to me in my change here in NYC. The distance between New York, New York, United States and Perth, Australia:

11606 miles (18679 km) (10086 nautical miles)

Well coins do end up in strange places. Here are 7 out of 10 coins I found over the years.

Yes Australia has beautiful beaches, beautiful women and some of the best looking circulating coins in the developed world. Although why they still keep the Queen on there coins is beyond me.

  1. we keep the queen on because we're still part of the comonwealth. We had our chance to become a republic w few years ago, but for somereason we decided not to (i wasn't of voting age yet damnit)

  2. You're a commonwealth. I never knew that I thought Puerto Rico was the last commonwealth. Thanks for the info.

Well next vote you may be able to free yourself from that royal grip.

    ReplyDelete
  3. In 1972 we dropped the word "Commonwealth of" from our currency and only have "Australia" on it. (Notes not coins). Our constitution is such that the Queen is our Head of State and all new legistlation (laws) has to be approved by the Queen. In our case it is her representative, the Governor General for Federal laws and the State Governors for each Australian State.

I'll ask if you like that system or would you want to remove the Royals all together?

  5. Australia is an independent monarchy. Theoretically the monarchies of Australia and the UK are as seperate as that of the UK and Tonga, but in reality of course it is the same person. Real executive power lies in the hands of the Prime Minister who is elected. The Queen operates through the Governor-General who is appointed by the Queen on recommendation by the Prime Minister.

The proposed republican model of Australia was to have the President approved by a two-thirds majority of parliment. This was rejected. Many people say that we should have the ability to elect our own Governor-General but this is due to a misunderstanding of the GG's role.
It is quite different from the American President for example as the GG is supposed to be an apolitical observer, or referee. If the GG was elected, that role would be compromised. Currently, with the GG being appointed by recommendation from the Prime Minister, there is the danger that the PM could appoint a biased GG but in practice this has never really occured.
A GG appointed by a two-thirds majority has appeal as it would mean the GG is acceptable to both sides of parliment and therefore (probably) an apolitical choice.

But really, the role of GG is almost entirely ceremonial, and what is more ceremonial than a monarchy? It gives things a bit of pomp.

  7. Commemorative coin of the birth of "The Royal Heir" 22nd June 1982

I've never heard of this one.
If it doesn't have a denomination or country then it is not a coin. It may be a medal from a private mint.

    Sorry.

Could you please tell me how much this one would be worth?

    Thanks heaps!

  17. Australian penny from 1936,

    First, great picture.

Second that coin would grade as environmentally damaged, if you want to continue cleaning it stick it in a potato for a day or two.

The green stuff is verdigris and permanent dropping the value to about $0.03 even if not damaged it still is a common coin.

In 1946 Australia only minted 242,000 of these coins which is very low and many were melted.

Most other pennies are very common.

For the half-penny 1923 and 1915 are the only otnes with high value, the rest are common.

Probably worth £1 ($1.40) on eBay.

The king is George the FIfth and all those letters are his full Latin title: "Georgius V dei gratia Britanniarum omnium rex, fidei defensor, India imperator"

In English it means: George V, by the grace of God, King of all Britains (meaning the Empire), defender of the faith, Emperor of India.

The only Grant coin I know is from 1922 it says HALF DOLLAR and is about $150 for the common version.

If you see no date 1822 1922 or denomination then it is some type of medal only worth metal value.

Are any of the pennies that I have in my collection (ranging from 1911 - 1964) of any worth at all? They are all in very good condition.
    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  178. I've just done some quick research, it seems that the 1930 penny is definitely the one I'd want to have. Apparently there have been offers of up to $1,000,000 for it. If only it was a full collection.

Assuming no varieties about $45.00 for the collection.

In very good the 1930 penny would be about $5,000.

Varieties like 1920 with or without dots.
    1920 without dots $20.00
1920 with dot below scroll $2.00
1920 with dot above bottom scroll $2.00
1920 with dots below bottom scroll and above upper $20.00

So it gets complex but without the key dates you are missing the collection is probably less than $200.00 even if you have scarce varieties.
