My oldest change find ever happened on February 11 2006 it was this not so pretty 1907 Indian Head Cent. I received in my change from a store or supermarket, I can't quite recall because it was mixed in all my change.
Now this beats a 1913 penny I found back in the early '80s. That one was in circulation for about 70 years before I found it. This 1907 coin had been in circulation for almost 100 years.
This gives me some hope of my goal of finding a gold coin in circulation but as of late I have found very few coins that are interesting or valuable.

Metal: 95% Copper 5% Tin & Zinc
Value: $2.00 in G-4
How could this coin still be in circulation? Well it could be another collector placed it there. It could be a kid used it from his parents collection or some one needed to buy something and accidentally used it. What really kept it in circulation was the ugly stain over the date, in hand it is difficult to read and looks like 1987, which would confuse non-collectors.
Either way it was a cool find and I hope that you find something as old.

The only other 1909 Indian Head Cent is the 1909-S with the S located on the reverse underneath the wreath it is worth ten times the value of the 1909.

ReplyDeleteSounds like a die break or die crack it is when the die used to mint the coin is broken because of wear.
Here is a one I found on a 1956 cent.
And some cracks on a dime .
Generally the cracks add $0.25 to the value and breaks add $1.00. Only break is really outstanding will it raise the price over $10.00.

ReplyDeleteI work at a bank and collect coin. We get people who cash in coin all the time. I recently was running coin through the machine when I found a 1864. It is wore from being in circulation but im wondering how i can clean it good. Any idea on the vaule? Plus I had a person bring in there old coin collection and cash it in. I bought all of the old pennies. there was 50 dollars worth in 1909-1957. Is there any ones I should look for that have extreme value? What is a good way to clean that many pennies? Kinda looking for a quick way that doesnt require all that much work. Thanks!

Well condition is key the better the more it's worth.
* Wheat pennies in low grades go $0.02-$0.10 in general. Check out the years below for coins that are valued more.
* Rare dates: 1909-S, 1909-S V.D.B., 1914-D, 1922, 1931-S
* Scarce dates: 1910-S, 1911-S, 1912-S, 1913-S, 1914-S, 1915-S, 1922-D, 1922-D, 1924-D
Of course any error has value.
You would do good investing in a coin book or magazine.
As for cleaning it is simple.
--Never Clean Coins--
Any amateur attempt at cleaning will damage the coin. If a coin is rare then the dirt will not change the value.
Let the buyer deal with the dirt.
Unless rare most of these coins can be sold on eBay or a coin shop for twice the face value.
If rare then eBay or Heritage Auctions are good sites.
how about cleaning the coins to read the dates? some of them are really dirty. I dont really plan on selling them I am trying to build up my collection. when they came to me they were in a safety deposit box all wrapped in rolls. they are all in really nice condition for how old they are. Any chance of having a list of all of the pennies with years and how much they are worth?

ReplyDeleteAny cleaning is bad, it may look nice for a while but if done wrong it becomes bad.
That said pure acetone, not nail polish remover, to dip the coins in and rinse with distilled water.
Here is a good link if no price is listed in low grade assume it is only a few cents.

1963 D Penny with Eisenhower head struck over Lincoln and the 3 lower than the other digits. It's in very good condition. I've searched all over the net and haven't found anything covering this coin. Do you have any idea of value? Rarity? Etc.
