An Error Penny

Do you have an error penny and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.11a

On May 22 of this year I was searching through my change at the end of the day and found a 1956 wheat cent, which was ok they are worth about in that condition.

I left the coin on my desk because I was too busy to catalog my newest find. Then a few days later I noticed some crud on the coin then I looked closer and saw it was actually excess copper between the B and E in LIBERTY.
11
Immediately I recognized it was a "BIE" error and sure enough I got my error book out and there it was as clear as day.

Here's this coin stats...
II-F-4 BIE Die Variety (W) = a die break or crack between the B and the E.
Fairly common in the years 1955-1958 and value at $1.00 to $20.00.
I figure due to all the green spots and circulation wear that mine is closer to $1.00.

For a while BIE pennies became very popular and the BIE Guild was formed. Soon so many of these errors were found that the value went down and the collectors stopped tracking these coins. The BIE Guild dissolved and now unless the coin is proof or in excellent shape the premium for this error is low.

Here is a better picture of this type of error from LeeG(an expert collector) he also found a 1956 BIE but as you see in a higher grade.Do you have an error penny and want to know its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

  2. 1913 penny is $0.75 in good grade
and up to $30.00 in mint condition.

As long as the date is visible it is in good grade the more details you can see the higher the grade.

  4. 1975 penny with the 7 struck backwards on it.

No I've never seen this type of, at least a real one.

This can be easily faked but there is a thing called Dropped letter but it would indented.

I think it's either a fake or damage.

  5. it looks like on one of my pennys the 1956 is crocked is that possible.

    ReplyDelete
  6. 1956 is crocked is that possible

I assume you mean cracked. It is common for cracks to appear and usually it brings no extra value.

Ooops, that is probably after mint damage again no extra value.

About the same because German coins were very common the produced from many mints with high standards.
Plus during WWII the soldiers brought back many coins from Germany.

  15. i have a lincoln penny that has the monument stamped on both sides, and if that werent enough, on one side, lincoln is stamped on top of the monument.
i've had it looked at by local collectors, but where i live, their resources are few and very slow.
you can see part of the date, but its stamped backwards i guess and hard to read because lincoln gets in the way.
lincoln is NOT ''indented. it is a raised up stamping.
the monument is stamped ''in'' and lincoln is dimensional.
i am trying to get a photo that shows it cleary. it has been marked an authentic currency, but still, no value or history on it.

  16. Hi, I just found a 1986 penny with the back struck in reverse over the front. I thought it was through the back but the back was struck again too at a different angle. Can you tell me what it may be worth?

    ReplyDelete
  17. lincoln penny that has the monument stamped on both sides

Hard to tell what error it is but it sounds like it's struck twice. If the date can be read it would be about $200 but I can't be sure.

1986 penny with the back struck in reverse over the front.

Just like the previous it is nearly impossible to be sure but it sounds the same as the other person's coin.
It needs to graded by an expert.

  18. I have a 1970 penny (noticed they were in your coin of the day), I have heard that these are worth more if the date is small print. Is this true, and How do I find out if it is small print?

You must have me confused with
    http://coinoftheday.blogspot.com/
    Which is different guy.

Still good question but only the 1970-S coin is the one with a small date large date difference.

The 1970-S large date is about $0.35 in mint state.
The 1970-S small date is about $65.00 in mint state.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1914 S penny with the image of Lincoln stamped on the front with the entire back blank.

This an unlikely error because some impression should have made it to the back.

It's a shame because that is a $20.00 coin. Sounds like damage and no extra value.

That said there is a small possibility of sort of error but it has to be seen by an expert.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I am 62 years old and this 1914 S Lincoln penny with only an impression on the front belonged to my grandfather who owned a grocery store. He gave me this coin over 40 years ago. There does not appear to have been any filing done to the back. It has been kept in a case for 40+ years. Would the San Francisco mint have any info on such an error?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Would the San Francisco mint have any info on such an error?

No since 1924 the mint has changed three 3imes plus they don't track errors.

The fact that is has been in your family for 40+ years means little since more fakes were made in the past. Today very few people would bother faking pennies.

Like I said before your best is an expert try contacting...
Fred Weinberg that link also shows a possible match.

  27. 1960 D silver-colored penny with a very raised edge. It is in very good condition. It looks like it might be plated, but I'm not sure

One way to test if it is plated is to weigh it.
If it is about 3.11 grams it is a fake worth nothing. Any other weight would need more investigating.

An off-metal error would be worth hundreds.

  33. 1970-s lincoln penny with the following error. The word "we" is minimal and the word "trust" is missing. It is not from wear as the above ridge is pristine. The only info I can find is that it is considered the Atheist penny.

The famed "Atheist Cent" was formed when the die broke leaving a lump where the words WE TRUST should be.

Yours may be one of these because there are several varieties but it can also be a fake made by sanding of the words.

The coin was just a normal error that one coin dealer decided to hype and name Atheist after this any coin missing parts of the In God We Trust motto has the same name.

Assuming yours is real it's about $2.00 in very-good.

  36. I found a 1989 D last night, instead of the "D" being raised, its punched inside, really thin, i found it to be popular on a couple other dates, but couldn't find anything specifically on 89'. It's semi-BU condition. Also, are there any books available that go into these penny errors further?

    ReplyDelete
  37. 1989 D last night, instead of the "D" being raised, its punched inside, really thin

This does not sound like an error. It sounds like damage or some sort of alteration.

The only way a letter can be punched in would be a Dropped Filling but that would not be in the same place as the normal D.

    The best error books are...
-The Complete Lincoln Cent Encyclopedia by Shane M. Anderson

-Price Guide to Mint Errors 7th Ed. by Alan Herbert

The book by Herbert is much better.
If you still believe it's an error take a picture and start posting in forums to see if anyone else recognizes it.

  38. i have a penny with a raised fin error, a 2007 nickel with a lamination error. i also have a dime that looks like it got chopped up on one side. the words liberty on the front and united on the back are pushed closer to the inside of the coin and appear strecthed. also, there appears to be a die cud that is covering parts of "in God we trust." thank you very much for any information on value you can give me for any of these.

    ReplyDelete
  39. penny with a raised fin error,
A minor finned error starts at about $20.00 if not certified.

2007 nickel with a lamination error.
Lamination on these nickels have been pretty common but they start at about $5.00

dime that looks like it got chopped up on one side. the words liberty on the front and united on the back are pushed closer to the inside of the coin and appear strecthed. also, there appears to be a die cud that is covering parts of "in God we trust."

This one sounds the most interesting and should start at about $50.00.

For all these value I'm assuming a low grade and not certified.

Of course higher grades and authentication would raise the values.

  40. i have a 1983 in au condition. it has a little doubling on the back on the m in america. any idea how much and also how do u get those nice close up? do u scan it? or take a picture

    ReplyDelete
  41. 1983 in au condition. it has a little doubling on the back on the m in america.

If this is a Doubled Die Reverse and this is the only doubling you see it is a minor variety. So about $7.50.

But it may be a machine doubling which has no value.

I usually take scan since at 350 dpi to 450 dpi and cropping the coin image.

But this doesn't work well for most doubling.

Try a camera with a macro lens or setting and good lighting.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  43. how can u tell if it is 350-400dpi?

The software or manual that came with it should guide you.

What I do is scan the coin using the computers control. If the details are weak I just scan it again using a higher DPI but I have Visioneer scanner.

Each coin is different so it takes practice.

  44. hi it me again. this time i found a 1961 bu penny. i looked at it and saw it looked a little weird. i am pretty sure it is a double die obverse. it is very clear on we in "god we trust" the penny seems to have 2 more errors. there is a cud next to the 1 in "1961". the other "error" is a hole like dip in the back of the coin. it is located on the E of "ONE CENT" can u please tell me how much. i will include pictures if u go to http://coincollectingforfun.blogspot.com/

    ReplyDelete
  45. 1961 bu penny. i looked at it and saw it looked a little weird.

The pictures are bad, not detailed at all so I can't see what you actually have.

There is a Doubled Die obverse 1961 but it is minor about $1.00

The cud would also be minor no extra value.
The dent sounds like damage dropping the value.

Overall it sounds like a late stage machine doubling not a real doubled die but without a good image I can't confirm it.

Yes, for 1965, 1966, and 1967 no mintamrks were made they were all blank.

It's about $0.02 mostly based on copper value.

  49. i could spend $3000-$5000. i was thinking 1909 SVDB, 1922 no d strong, or 1916 d mercury.

This just my opinion but I would go as follows...
    1916 D Mercury Dime
    1922 no D Strong
    1909 S VDB

Recently 1916D dimes have been reaching market highs as well as the 1922 no D.

While the 1909 S VDB are flat.

If you are really tied always go for the highest grade.

This could be a Broadstrike error it happens when coins get stuck in the die and is struck by another coin.

It needs to seen by expert either online or in a coin shop. If real it's about $300.00. Unfortunately it can easily be faked.

If you want to just post a picture on a free photo site like Photobucket and drop a link here.

It happens when the coin is pressed then gets ejected but lands inside the press again instead of falling down to the containers.

Most coin collectors would like this error a coin shop, forum or eBay are your best bets.

U.S. coins have coin alignment so holding the coin in between your fingers and flipping it from left to right will have the reverse upside.

When I get it in the right light, it looks like it could be a 1974 penny, but I have no proof. the "L" is completely gone in LIBERTY and the "I" and "B" are extremely faded. The sided don't seem to be worn down very much, so I don't understand why the marks are missing. Their is no visible mint mark. On the reverse side, the "E" in EURIBUS UNUM is gone as well as the rest of words being faded. The "O" in OF and the last "A" in AMERICA seem to be mostly gone and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is pretty faded, but as I said before, their is a rim left. I am a pretty big amateur. There are 9 known examples of the billions upon billions of coins.

To me it sounds like damage. Holes are almost always damage since blank with holes would get filled during pressing.
But if it is a die break then it's just about a $1.00 or $2.00 extra.

Two reason coins bubble are because of blow torching or being stuck in the dirt for years.

Maybe it is defective stock or a lamination on the reverse but at this low grade it would not bring much value.

Yes there is one well known example with strong doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST and on the 9 and 7 of the date.

In G-4 it's about $100.00 but it needs to be verified since some machine doubling also exist for that date but weak across all the letters.

    Listed is a 1954 D/D, 1954 D/D/D, and 1954 S/S and a few other minor varieties but not yours.
