On May 22 of this year I was searching through my change at the end of the day and found a 1956 wheat cent, which was ok they are worth about 2¢ in that condition.
I left the coin on my desk because I was too busy to catalog my newest find. Then a few days later I noticed some crud on the coin then I looked closer and saw it was actually excess copper between the B and E in LIBERTY.
Immediately I recognized it was a "BIE" error and sure enough I got my error book out and there it was as clear as day.
Here's this coin stats...
II-F-4 BIE Die Variety (W) = a die break or crack between the B and the E.
Fairly common in the years 1955-1958 and value at $1.00 to $20.00.
I figure due to all the green spots and circulation wear that mine is closer to $1.00.
For a while BIE pennies became very popular and the BIE Guild was formed. Soon so many of these errors were found that the value went down and the collectors stopped tracking these coins. The BIE Guild dissolved and now unless the coin is proof or in excellent shape the premium for this error is low.
Here is a better picture of this type of error from LeeG(an expert collector) he also found a 1956 BIE but as you see in a higher grade.

As long as the date is visible it is in good grade the more details you can see the higher the grade.

This can be easily faked but there is a thing called Dropped letter but it would indented.
I think it's either a fake or damage.

you can see part of the date, but its stamped backwards i guess and hard to read because lincoln gets in the way.
lincoln is NOT ''indented. it is a raised up stamping.

Still good question but only the 1970-S coin is the one with a small date large date difference.
The 1970-S large date is about $0.35 in mint state.
The 1970-S small date is about $65.00 in mint state.

It's a shame because that is a $20.00 coin. Sounds like damage and no extra value.
That said there is a small possibility of sort of error but it has to be seen by an expert.
I am 62 years old and this 1914 S Lincoln penny with only an impression on the front belonged to my grandfather who owned a grocery store. He gave me this coin over 40 years ago. There does not appear to have been any filing done to the back. It has been kept in a case for 40+ years. Would the San Francisco mint have any info on such an error?

The fact that is has been in your family for 40+ years means little since more fakes were made in the past. Today very few people would bother faking pennies.

ReplyDeleteOne way to test if it is plated is to weigh it.
If it is about 3.11 grams it is a fake worth nothing. Any other weight would need more investigating.
An off-metal error would be worth hundreds.

ReplyDeleteThe famed "Atheist Cent" was formed when the die broke leaving a lump where the words WE TRUST should be.
Yours may be one of these because there are several varieties but it can also be a fake made by sanding of the words.
The coin was just a normal error that one coin dealer decided to hype and name Atheist after this any coin missing parts of the In God We Trust motto has the same name.
Assuming yours is real it's about $2.00 in very-good.

I found a 1989 D last night, instead of the "D" being raised, its punched inside, really thin, i found it to be popular on a couple other dates, but couldn't find anything specifically on 89'. It's semi-BU condition. Also, are there any books available that go into these penny errors further?

ReplyDeleteThis does not sound like an error. It sounds like damage or some sort of alteration.
The only way a letter can be punched in would be a Dropped Filling but that would not be in the same place as the normal D.

The book by Herbert is much better.
If you still believe it's an error take a picture and start posting in forums to see if anyone else recognizes it.

ReplyDeleteIf this is a Doubled Die Reverse and this is the only doubling you see it is a minor variety. So about $7.50.
But it may be a machine doubling which has no value.
I usually take scan since at 350 dpi to 450 dpi and cropping the coin image.
But this doesn't work well for most doubling.
Try a camera with a macro lens or setting and good lighting.

What I do is scan the coin using the computers control. If the details are weak I just scan it again using a higher DPI but I have Visioneer scanner.
Each coin is different so it takes practice.

There is a Doubled Die obverse 1961 but it is minor about $1.00
The cud would also be minor no extra value.
The dent sounds like damage dropping the value.
Overall it sounds like a late stage machine doubling not a real doubled die but without a good image I can't confirm it.

ReplyDeleteYes, for 1965, 1966, and 1967 no mintamrks were made they were all blank.
It's about $0.02 mostly based on copper value.

1916 D Mercury Dime
1922 no D Strong
1909 S VDB
Recently 1916D dimes have been reaching market highs as well as the 1922 no D.
While the 1909 S VDB are flat.
If you are really tied always go for the highest grade.

ReplyDeleteRaised edges should not affect the size. It could be a finned rim or made on a foreign planchet.
You need to weigh it and take very-good pics and then post it online where other experts can see it.

Even if this is an error it would be some sort of die crack so no extra value.
It's about $0.20 without reverse images, assuming a real error.

This is caused by a weak impression, no extra value.

ReplyDeleteThis could be a Broadstrike error it happens when coins get stuck in the die and is struck by another coin.
It needs to seen by expert either online or in a coin shop. If real it's about $300.00. Unfortunately it can easily be faked.

Hey, I don't even know if this is possible, but I found a 1944 wheat penny that seems to have a small gold fragment melted into it, the little nugget is raised from the coin very slightly in the back almost on top of the bottom of the letter C in Cent, and there is no impact marks to suggest it was pounded into it.... is that even possible?

ReplyDeleteSomeone once mounted this coin as jewelery. If you can scrap the gold off it's fine because the penny is in such bad shape that it's only worth $0.02.

Doubling is easy to see but there are 2 types.
Machine doubling looks flat like one is on top of the other.
Doubled die is curvy it looks like it is next to each other.
Machine doubling is worthless, there are 3 known Doubled Dies that are all about $2.00 in fine.

If you want to just post a picture on a free photo site like Photobucket and drop a link here.
It happens when the coin is pressed then gets ejected but lands inside the press again instead of falling down to the containers.
Most coin collectors would like this error a coin shop, forum or eBay are your best bets.
I would add in this economy it is tougher to sell especially ungraded. So get good pictures.

Sounds like a die clash, it is common but depending on grade it's about $2.00.

True doubling is very rare from what you describe you it is Machine Doubling which is worthless. Try visiting a coin shop to confirm any of them are real.
If your good with macro photography you can take pictures and post them on a coin forum.

U.S. coins have coin alignment so holding the coin in between your fingers and flipping it from left to right will have the reverse upside.

ReplyDeleteThis doesn't sound like any error I know. I have seen fakes like this they are easily made by coin clubs as gifts. These may have some value if the coin club documented them but if not it has no extra value.
If you still believe it is some sort of error contact Fred Weinberg.
I have what appears to be a 2000 penny on a dime planchet -- I saw a pictureof one on the web but it didn't give any prospective value -- can you determine a value for me (I'll assume AU cond.)

The 2 is where it is most noticeable but it should be through out the date if genuine.

ReplyDeleteSounds like damage it could be a an error if the coin is abnormally large if not I suspect just damage.
If you still believe it to be an error try taking a photo of it for online viewing or asking local dealers for an opinion.
I have a 1992 Lincoln with the very close AM from AMERICA on the obverse, which is supposed to be very valuable according to one book I have, but I can't find any other info on it. It is maybe fine condition, no mint mark. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteYes this was caused by a Proof reverse used instead of the regular business reverse.
Several 1992-D were found and average $1,000.00.
I think only one 1992 was found but I never seen it either, whoever found it is not online.
Even in fine condition a 1992 Close AM is about $2,000.00 of course if graded expect more.

ReplyDeleteThis sounds like outside damage, but there is an error called Dropped Letter it has only been seen on the reverse but it's possible if it is the same size as any other A on the coin.
Value is hard to say since it's rarely seen at auction but if real maybe $100.
I was just going through some coins, and found an interesting 1857 Flying Eagle. It looks very much like it is a 1857 over 6. Do you know if such a thing exists? I know there is a 1858/7 but can't find mention of 1857/6....

ReplyDeleteAs far as I know it does not exist. There is a group of "Snow varieties" that refer in 1857 coins of having an 1856 obverse style on an 1857 coin.

I have a 1955 DDO Lincoln Penny that I just received back from PCGS. Coin was determined genuine but unable to grade due to the coin having been cleaned. Any idea on the "ballpark" of what this might be worth due to the circumstances? Coin is in good shape, but the color is a bit "off". Great detail and it is certified as genuine. Any thoughts? Thx.

ReplyDeleteMost collectors would not buy this since it has been cleaned and that is where the value comes from.
You might want ANACS to grade it as they had one marked cleaned at AU-50 sell for close to $1,200.00
Just in a PCGS holder marked clean not more than $400.00 less if the details are not sharp.

No a cud is a die break that leaves behind a raised mound of metal on the coin. Usually from the edge to part of the design.

I have a 1974? penny I found in my Great Grandmothers penny collection today. In the date, the 1 and the 9 are clear, the 7 is faded and the next number is, well not there. When I get it in the right light, it looks like it could be a 1974 penny, but I have no proof. the "L" is completely gone in LIBERTY and the "I" and "B" are extremely faded. The sided don't seem to be worn down very much, so I don't understand why the marks are missing. Their is no visible mint mark. On the reverse side, the "E" in EURIBUS UNUM is gone as well as the rest of words being faded. The "O" in OF and the last "A" in AMERICA seem to be mostly gone and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is pretty faded, but as I said before, their is a rim left. I am a pretty big amateur. I LOVE coins, but know practically nothing about them. In advance I thank you for any information/history/value that you can find about it. I apologize for the length of this question.

ReplyDeleteThis is just a weak strike or late stage die it happens the die used to press the coin gets old and worn. It has no extra value.
Nice to see a passion for coins just keep doing that, put stuff that looks strange aside. Eventually you'll learn what is a valuable error or a common error.

There are 9 known examples of the billions upon billions of coins.
One quarter with a double reverse was found and sold for $80,000 it is known as a mule error.
That said many fakes exist and over the last 8 years all the double-sided coins have been fake.
I have a 1949 wheat penny that has a couple of major defects. Around the "LIBERTY" on the head side, there are some pretty large raised spots where the die broke, or wasnt pressed hard enough. It also has 2 small holes on the reverse that are NOT after production but were defects in the blank... any ideas?

ReplyDeleteTo me it sounds like damage. Holes are almost always damage since blank with holes would get filled during pressing.
But if it is a die break then it's just about a $1.00 or $2.00 extra.

ReplyDeleteThe pictures are not the best but it looks like environmental damage.
Two reason coins bubble are because of blow torching or being stuck in the dirt for years.
Maybe it is defective stock or a lamination on the reverse but at this low grade it would not bring much value.

ReplyDeleteIt's a fake or a Magician's Coin. I can't be 100% because the quality of the video is poor. A high grade scan or photo would be better but what you said about thickness indicates a fake.
If you still believe it is genuine then submit pictures or visit a dealer in person.

Unfortunately this is damage, very common I've seen this plenty of times. This damage may have been done at the mint then it is a Struck Through Grease Error but it still holds no value.

ReplyDeleteYes there is one well known example with strong doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST and on the 9 and 7 of the date.
In G-4 it's about $100.00 but it needs to be verified since some machine doubling also exist for that date but weak across all the letters.
I have a 1954 Penny that has a strong S and then partially over or under it there seems to be a D that the curved part of the D is out to the right of the S. It makes it look almost like an S and a J but if you look closely it is an S and a D. Is this a worthless common error or is it more special?

ReplyDeleteI've never heard of this error. There is a rare one for the Nickel 1954 S/D but none in the books for the cent.
Listed is a 1954 D/D, 1954 D/D/D, and 1954 S/S and a few other minor varieties but not yours.
I would lean to fake or cud error but it must be seen in hand by a coin dealer/expert. This would be a first but not impossible.
I would add because the way coins were made back then it would be a 1954 D/S error if genuine. Not 1954 S/D small difference.

ReplyDeleteIt is likely a machined doubling from a late stage die. The filled 8 basically proves it was a faulty die that pressed the coin.
No extra value as these were common in the 1950s.
I have an old wheat back penny that is really thin. The details are crystal clear so it hasn't been acid dissolved or altered. Also a quarter from the 50's with several pot marks (spot like craters of various sizes)
