On July 20, 2005 these Marine Corps Commemorative Coins went on sale. $35.00 for the uncirculated silver dollar and $39.00 for the Proof silver dollar. I bought one of each immediately and one came in three months and the second came in December.
Usually the mint is fast in shipping but this time they took extremely long.
Each coin is to honor the 230th Anniversary of the Marine Corps.
Here is the Uncirculated one, the picture was taken with a camera. Notice the frosty surface and the color was off because I used a different light sources for each picture.
This is the Proof one, notice the black surface because it has a mirror like surface. I put these in a scanner to get the picture, but I did not clean it and the smudges are on the plastic.
As for the value they currently have. Well it is hard to be precise but they sell on eBay for $45.00 with the government packaging. Soon though the true mintage will come out and the Red Book price may be anywhere from $45.00-$55.00.The quality was less then perfect on these two coins but I only bought two so I'm stuck with them. This year the mint was disappointing after 4 years of near perfect coins.

ReplyDeleteThese coins are generally not faked.
But the appearance is the best way to test. If they look fake they might be.
Also weigh them each one should be about 26.73 grams.

ReplyDeleteAbout $22.00 now and maybe if the redesign the bill again for 2010 and again by 2015 then it may go up $25 or $30.
But that is just a guess these notes are very common and hold little value in circulating condition.

Not sure what you mean are these bill attached an uncut sheet.
This scratch pad book was made by the bank using the new one dollar bills. They were put into a cover with Texas Scratch Pad on the front and The Bank of Robstown on the back cover. I believe the bills were glued somhow at the top of the fold on the scratch pad. They were sold as gifts.

ReplyDeleteThis is a bank novelty gift it has no extra value as a set but if the glue has not damaged the bills it would be about $3.00 per bill if crisp-uncirculated.

Thanks for all the help above. I was looking at a $5 bill that I have in my pocket and noticed the front of the serial number started with FK and under the left serial number is the mark K11, could you explain the two prefix numbers?

ReplyDeleteThe second letter "K" is the district letter which in your case is Dallas. That means this notes was made specifically for the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank for distribution in that area.
The first letter F is Bill Series in your case Series 2003-A.
The previous note was Series 2003 and started with a D.
...so why is on of mine showing the star in the prefix letter position?
On Non-Federal notes the star is placed in the prefix these notes are no longer issue, since about 1963, but are still okay to use.

I suspect they were plated gold after the set was broken up since I can't find any info on this "gold" medal.
Weigh it, if it's 0.82 oz then it is sterling silver plated in a thin later of gold.
This was part of the Franklin Mint Special Commemorative Issues Medals 1975
Special First Edition Proofs.
This is the 3rd of 36 medals in the set.
Sterling Silver
Mintage: 1,872
The entire set is somewhat rare so each medal is hard to evaluate but the are commonly sold for about $30.00.
Now if it weighs more than 0.82oz I am completely stumped.

It's a buyer market...if you can afford it.
I have a US Marine Coin that looks like the 2005 commerative coin, but does not have the 2005 date on it (does have the 1775 date, although it is located on the bottom eg. of the coin). It is the back of the coin that I am having difficulty identifying as it has every battle listed ending with Granada. This battle is listed at the bottom under the base of the flag raising motif. I have seen similiar coins, but none that list the number of occupations that this one does. It appears to be a gold plated coin (not sure on that one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think they would be slightly more about $450.00 for the set.
That is just $50 more than normal, because I'm assuming they are not officially graded and I don't know if others have been found.
So in a good auctions it may go for more but I like being conservative.

ReplyDelete--It means the coin was sent to a grading company like PCGS or NGC. The coin is examined by ANA or expert graders and gets sealed in a protective slab. It cost $30 or more to grade each coin depending on rarity.

--Yes, coins like most collectibles can have a wide range of values. Your skill as a buyer can change the price.
These are retail values, the cost for you to replace the coin at a fair market.
Also known as insurance value.

Lately fakes have been showing up from South American drug counterfeiters. 1996 was a big year for fakes.

Try several coin shops in your area, the reason 1996 fakes were good is that they used $1 and even $10 bills to make fake $20 bills.
That said errors are known for 1996 so it may cost you but to get it graded.
Try PCGS send 1 for grading and if real and high grade the can go to $500 or more.
Google PCGS and you will see a link to Authorized Dealers that may help.
Also look around PCGS to see if it is worth paying to get all or just one certified.

ReplyDeleteSounds like an optical illusion, the ink most likely smeared during printing giving the illusion of teeth.
Of course "teeth" are no possible since the there is only one portrait used and it is copied exactly every time.

2nd The Faulty Alignment does not add value it's too minor.
3rd The Odd watermark is just an Ink Smear error, the outline of the lips match with normal bills. So this is not a design variety. The Minor Ink Smear does not add value and unless it becomes popular like the Bugs Bunny Half Dollar this will never have any extra value.
In general most watermark errors are not seriously collected.
i have one more thing i need priced 1876-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle the grade is probally ms 65-66 i got it in a mystery box at an auction it had lots of silver coins in it also paid like $5 for whole box

That said it should be graded.
I am curious about a $20 misaligned star bill. Their is no border on the top (the bill is cut off at the tip of Jacksons hair) and a large border on the bottom. On the back it is the same way as the front, small border on top large border on the bottom. The serial number is: EK00053809*

This coin differs from all I have seen because it has Kuwait listed on the back, and every search I have done doesn't have it. The year is 1775 1oz .999 Fine Silver. Do I have any value on my hands? ReplyDeleteThis is a silver round and not an official coin.
I'm not sure what company designs them but they make about 5 designs of this 1775 United States Marine Corps every year.
They have no extra value above the 1 troy oz of silver. So about $30.00 that said I think the original sales prices was $69.99 so they are often seen at $75-$100 on retail sites but they are overvalued.
Your "Kuwait" means it was made recently, they modified an older design but that still adds no value.

ReplyDeleteYou have an Offset Printing error they are well known and yours is partial not complete.
Assuming the bill is circulated with folds and the serial number is not special then about $50.00.
