  1. I got 9 coins that are supposivly from ancient roman times or about 1500 years old. Romans didn't have banks, so they buried their money. do you think these coins are real and what do you think their value is?

  2. Until the 1800's people buried their money in the dirt.

Here is good site for Roman coins
    http://hobbyblog.blogspot.com/

but I suggest you go to one of the free photo hosting sites and put up back and front pictures of each and throw me a link.

But just because their old means their valuable some "widow's mites" sell for only $2.00 each even though they are 2,000 years old.

  4. NEVER CLEAN COINS.

A long soaking in olive oil.

Or use a Potato..Cut a potato in half then

put the coin between the halves and rubberband the halves together tightly.

Make a small slit in the potato and insert the coin then rubber band the slit shut( kinda like a butterfly bandaid)

Let set for length of time. Check periodically The gunk should just fall off.....may need a bit of assistance.

    Or a salt-water boiling.

But once again if you believe the coins are valuable never clean them take them to a pro.

  7. I have a 1959 penny that looks to be half copper and half nickel or zinc (??) don't know what kind of metal but it's silver. If you look at it from the side you can see the split in the two metals. Is this common? Is it worth anything? Just curious. I've saved it for about 20 years because it's unusual . Thanks for any information you might have.

  8. 1959 penny that looks to be half copper and half nickel or zinc (??)

1959 cents are all copper if any other metal was showing it would be streaky on the face of the coin and very light.

I've never heard of this error although I know of magic coins(for kids) that contain steel in the middle.

Is the coin magnetic and do you have pictures?

  9. I have the same coin, 1959 penny that is half copper/ half steel? It is not magnetic. And the color splits right down the middle/top to bottom, front and back.

  10. 1959 penny that is half copper/ half steel?

It couldn't be steel because steel was only used in 1943.
It may be a poorly mixed alloy.

It needs to be weighed. It should weigh 3.11 grams. I can only guess it is some after mint paint but it is hard to say.

  25. what years did the us government make pennies that are made of copper and nickles that are made of silver?
All U.S. cents through 1982 were made 95% copper.
1943 cent is Zinc plated Steel
1983 until today is 99.2% Zinc and 0.8% Copper

Nickels from 1942-1945 are 35% silver.

where would you sell them for there materials.
It is illegal to melt them or sell for scrap.
But most coin dealers will buy them for metal value or less.

last is bullion considered coins that are used for the materials they contain
I'm not sure what you mean.
Bullion coins can be used for value unless you are reporting for tax purposes.

No extra value, that is the back plate number and it just indicates what specific plate was used.
