My Newest Coin Is Old

Do you have a commemorative coin and want to find out its value? Leave a comment and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I didn't find this one in my change or buy it, instead it was given to me by oreol, I'm a winner. How I got this coin is irrelevant, it is such a cool coin. It is a 1893 Columbian Exposition half dollar.
1893

It is the first commemorative coin the United States ever made. The front has a bust of Columbus and the back has the his flagship the Santa Maria above two hemispheres.

1893b

They were originally sold for a dollar at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, 1893. Most people thought it was stupid to buy a fifty cent coin for a dollar so many were unsold and put in circulation at face value.

The example above is about MS-60 but it may have been cleaned or "whizzed" and would be worth less then an uncleaned coin, but I don't care. I think it's great, look at it.

There were two years that this coin was minted 1892 and 1893. Along with an Isabella quarter that is rarer.

Here's the stat's for the Columbian Exposition half dollar....
Year: 1892 (Not Pictured)
Mintage: 950,000
Metal: silver
Value: AU-50 $19.00 or MS-60 $32.00

Year: 1893
Mintage: 1,550,405
Metal: silver
Value: AU-50 $17.00 or MS-60 $30.00

  7. 4 half dollars the 1776 - 1976....4 quarter dollars with the same dates

    Just $0.50 and $0.25 each.
Unless they are silver which you tell by looking at the edge. If you see copper they are normal value.

If it is all silver they are the current value of silver about $3.00 and $6.00.

They're nice coins but with the exchange rates they maybe worth less then listed outside the U.S..

  8. Thank you very much for getting back to me, they are nice coins and they are going to be kept not sold anyway. I will have a closer look at them to find out if they are silver, my grandad did seem to have them wrapped well.

    Thanks again for your time.

This is an Offset Printing error it averages about $50.00.

Finding a good dealer is easier by going to coin forums and reading others experience. Many dealers are certified by PCGS and on their website they list them by state. Still if you find one in your area Google them and check the BBB.

I've stopped using dealers for a while so I'm not 100% on the state of coin shops in 2009.

This was a normal coin that was plated and stamped by a company that makes this stuff.

For collectors this is considered damage and has no extra value above face.
As art it may have a few dollars value.

Not a real coin, this is a private mint, possibly Hamilton Co. medal worth only its weight in silver.

It should be 99.9% silver just weigh it and check current silver values.

It is called a Cud or Die Break error, it happens when the die breaks and the coin is stamped with an empty space.

It starts at $5.00 but it that changes depending on eye appeal.
