2 Dimes, 2 Halves, 1 Time

Do you have a pocket find and want to find out its value? Leave a comment and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I found these four coins when I got some change back today, I had to ask for the half dollars. There were 12 halves in the register I could only take two because I did have enough money to buy them all.
The dimes are 1943 and 2005P, I choose to show the 2005P because it was the first of this year that I found.
new3

The halves are 1971D and 2002P.

  1. I have a very unusual foreign coin that I am unable to locate a value on. It is a 10 cent coin from 1944.
It says "Wilhelmina Koningin Der Nederlanden" on the side with the woman's portrait. I found a coin similar to this side but the back side of my coin doesn't match anything I can find plus the size of the dime is much smaller than the average size. The other side has a wreath type design covering the entire face with "10 cents 1944" in the middle of it. Any info and/or direction is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

    Very nice find. Congrats.

  5. I have a bracelet of 10 dimes with the words "Wilhelmina Koningin Der Nederlanden". 1 is from 1938, 1 is from 1939, and the other 8 are from 1944. would this be worth anything? If you could give me any information it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  6. 10 dimes "Wilhelmina Koningin Der Nederlanden".

    These are from the Netherlands.
    1938 is $0.35 in fine
    1939 is $0.35 in fine
1944 is $0.50 in fine but certain dimes that are 1944D are rare.

All together that is $4.70 not much but they probably look nice on the bracelet.

  7. I have a coin bracelet that is made up of Wilhelmina Koningin Der Nederlanden coins. 1 1937 10 cent,1 1941 10 cent, 4 1944 10 cent, 3 1944 25 cent. Can you estimate any value?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Netherlands coins in fine shape.
    1937 10 cent about $0.35
    1941 10 cent about $0.35
1944 10 cent about $0.35 depending on the mintmark.

    1944 25 cent about $0.85

They are all silver and will go up in value every time the price of silver goes up.
In total $5.05 but there are varieties of the 1944 10 cents that are very rare.

Not a coin but a private medal from the Franklin Mint from 1976 about $6.75.

1994 Stanley Cup Champions New York Rangers
    About $14.00.

Mothers Day 1874 One Oz Piece
I know of a 1974 Mother's Day silver round which was made for the silver it is considered a medal about $20.00 because of low mintage.

Most of these if I'm correct are medal made in the mid-1970s because of a silver craze. All of them have values that are just the current silver price. So many silver coins were made during this period that few are worth extra.

  11. hello, I have an 1842 quarter dollar from the USA. It's a "seated liberty". I'm obviously fairly certain that it is a large date (I wish it were a small date) but I'm wondering the aprox. value of it?
    Thanks in advance....

    ReplyDelete
  12. 1842 quarter dollar from the USA...large date

Yes if it was a proof it would be a small date.
In fine it is about $160.00 I did see one last week on eBay that looked VF sold for $180 so the market is currently unstable.

    Either way great coin.

  13. Thanks for your response....

One last thing, I just noticed that the images are flipped. To try to explain....if I turn the coin around from side to side, the eagle is upside down from how the lady appears. Is this common or is it a flaw?

    ReplyDelete
  14. if I turn the coin around from side to side, the eagle is upside down from how the lady appears

This is normal it is called coin alignment and it is how all US coins are made.

Medal alignment is when you turn it side to side and the reverse is not upside from the face. Many foreign coins are made like this.

    ReplyDelete
  15. sorry, perhaps I described it wrong....my coin is "medal alignment" rather than coin. The coin I have has the opposite rotation than US coins!

Thanks for your fast responses, you're the best resource on the web!

  17. I also have a bracelet made of coins from the Netherlands. 5 - 25 cent coins dated 1944 and 3 - 10 cent coins also dated 1944. How do I tell if the coins are of the rare variety ie P, D or S.

    Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Netherlands. 5 - 25 cent coins dated 1944
Each is about $1.50 this is mostly because of the silver content.

    3 - 10 cent coins also dated 1944

    1944P about $0.50
    1944D about $1,200.00
    1944S about $1.00

The mint mark is located on the reverse under the last 4 of the date 1944.

It is either a slanted P, slanted D, or slanted S.

    Hope it is a D.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The letter under the second 4 certainly looks like a D on both 1944 10 cent coins. Where do I go to find out if they are a D.
    Thank you

The D and P look a lot alike. If you have a coin shop or dealer near you you can go there.

Or you can take a good scan of them and post it online either here or at a coin forum but only a professional can tell you if it's real or a fake made from a modified P.

The only silver ones were the proofs and they have the S mint mark.

They are probably silver coated which bring no extra-value.

    To be sure weigh them.
    Silver is 11.50 grams
    Clad is 11.34 grams

There have been some errors but they are rare and made from silver quarters.

  25. I have 12 Wilhelmina Koningin Der Nederlanden silver dimes. The dates are from 1928-1939. When my dad left Europe at the end of WWII a guy traded him the dimes for my dad's Hershey Bars. They are all very 'new' looking in that they have little to no wear on them. Other than they came from my dad are they worth anything more than a dime?

    I'll assume a grade of almost-uncirculated.
    1928 about $10.00
    1930 about $14.00
    1934 about $37.50
    1935 about $6.50
    1936 about $3.50
    1937 about $2.50
    1938 about $2.50
    1939 about $2.50

These were the only years made and the key year is 1934. Even in lower grades they are all worth more than a dime because of the silver content.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Just wonder what makes 1934 so key? or special?

It had a low mintage of 2,000,000 while by 1944 they were making over 120,000,000 and melting the old ones for the silver content.

I'll still comment about this coin, brass plated steel but it's about $0.20 in very-fine.

copper "1977" canadian fifty cent piece
It should be nickel not copper if this is some sort of error it needs to be weighed to get a value.

I think you may be confused so a description of what is on the front and back of the coin would help.

  41. This may sound like a dumb question but I have to ask. I found an old coin collection, of sorts, that was in my father's things. I believe it is something given to him by someone as he was not a coin collector. I think he just tucked it away in a drawer and left it. At any rate, there is a 1872 Half Dime which I would imagine would be considered in Fine or Very Fine condition except......someone had drilled a tiny hold in the coin (presumably for a tiny chain type bracelet). We're going to list everything worth including in a set to sell the collection on e-bay or craigslist, but are trying to weed out things that just need to be culled out because they have no value. Any thoughts/input? Or as I said to begin with....a dumb question?

    ReplyDelete
  42. 1872 Half Dime which I would imagine would be considered in Fine or Very Fine condition except......someone had drilled a tiny hold in the coin (presumably for a tiny chain type bracelet).

The damage leaves the coin at about $1.00 but if it is a 1872-CC with the CC mintmark under the wreath it may be $10.00.

Feel free to leave a link to the auction or list the coins here.

Also there are no dumb questions because if this was a 1873-CC it would be $10,000 with the damage.

It is silver, a 1 Gulden from The Netherlands and as long as it has no holes it is fine. About $4.00.

There is a proof version of the same year and design, it would have a mirror finish that would be so highly polished that the background reflects everything. This one is about $200.00 but is rare.

    If real about $1,200.00.

That said I suspect a P was changed into a D, these types of fakes are common. You may have to get a loop or microscope or a coin expert to check.

  102. You seemed to know quite a bit about Wilhelmina Koningin Der Nederlanden coins. I like to know if there is any reference book that I can look up for my 1G, 1/4G and 1/10G of various years from 1929 to 1945. Is there any special coin that I should be looking out for that would worth more than just the silver content? Thank you.

The only source I know in the U.S. is Krause books...
    http://www.krausebooks.com/product/coins-of-the-netherlands/world-coins-books
    About $8.00 for the book.

1944 and 1945 are key dates for all Netherlands coins since they have varieties and small circulation that make worth a lot.

  116. Thank you for such a speedy reply. I had taken my Wilhelmina 10 G coin to a local coin dealer recently, and he said that it is gold. But the offer was far below $315.00, so I decided to keep it. For the time being anyway. If I was to sell it, might you be able to recommned the best ways (s) to go about doing so?

    Thank you,

    Kristine

  117. If I was to sell it, might you be able to recommned the best ways (s) to go about doing so?
Gold is at $1,542.40 per ounce
your coin has 0.1947 ounces of gold
    Value at the least is..
    $1,542.40 * 0.1947 = $300.30

This coin is fairly common but it still is $315.00 in extra-fine.
If brilliant-uncirculated it can be $450.00

So anything under $300 is not acceptable although certain coin dealers take 15% off so $255 is what they offer but I would hold out for more.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Oh and try different jewelers, gold buyers, or coin dealers in your area.

If not then sell at eBay for metal value.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Thank you again for such a quick reply.
I have no idea if the coin is uncirculated or not. It had been placed (Not by me) into a pendant holder, but I don't think that it will mark the coin, if it is removed. How might I be able to tell whether or not it is brilliant and not circulated?

    Thank you,

    Kristine

    ReplyDelete
  120. How might I be able to tell whether or not it is brilliant and not circulated?

Brilliant usually means it has full luster.
Uncirculated means it has never been touched so it would not have scratches. No marks of any type and the entire coin would look brand new.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Thank you...

I took another look at my Wilhelmina, and I don't believe that she is uncirculated, because I can detect very tiny, minor scratches. There are not many, but still, no perfect finish on this coin. Too bad...

  123. 1970 UN world youth assembly medal in original plastic container BUT it is a bronze colour...I am confused?I have researched and read that it has silver content?

The silver version were first day covers and were on a postcard with a stamp.

Later issues would be gold, silver, and bronze. That said I cannot find any mintage or sales for the later issues.

Sorry, this one is a mystery. I cannot say how many bronze were made and if it is rarer than silver. I go by auction or grey sheet value and this is not listed.

That is common, from 1836-1866 they all were made in coin alignment.

In 1867 they were changed to medal alignment.
