That Old Penny

Do you have a wheat cent and want to find out its value? Leave a comment and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

One of the most collectible coins out their is the "wheat cent", called this because the back contains two stalks of wheat. First minted in 1909 and and last minted in 1958 for and by the United States of America. Like most coins, even in it's most worn down, state it will retain face value. The least one of these coins* can be worth is 1 cent. The most a low grade circulating wheat cent can be worth is about $460 - $550 (US dollars). High grade or near perfect wheat cents can go for $20,000 or more.

The front features are just about identical to todays modern pennies. The grading of these coins depend on how clear all the original features are and how unblemished it appears, just like choosing a cover girl, with one exception. The coin can not ever be polished or altered or it may revert to it's original face value.

The oldest penny I ever found out-of-pocket was from 1913 and had a red book** of about $0.85, the rarest, in terms of amount minted, I found was 1936S valued at $0.15 and the most valuable penny I got out-of-pocket was a 1916 cent in very fine condition, value: $2.00.
Prices of coins jump around wildly so don't hold these values for long time speculating.

Foot Note:
* coins maybe worth less than face value if altered, damaged or the government behind it no longer recognize that currency
** red books give the average retail value you would pay for a coin from a group of associated retailers and blue books contain the price you would expect to sell the coin for, divide the red book price by ten and that is the average selling price.
EX. 1936S cent: red book you buy at $0.15= blue book you sell at $0.02

  1. I never knew any of this. I have a LOAD of pennies! I'm going to have to go through them and check for the wheat pennies. I just may have one. I put spare change in a bowl and at the end of the year I count and package them and make a deposit. I usually collect about $100 in change a year. It's silly but it's turned into a tradition. Great blog! I'll be back.

  2. Thanks, I do the same except I change it every 3 months because it gets so heavy after a year.
The good thing about collecting coins is if you give up they are still worth money and can be sold or used in a store with ease.

  3. I took a lot of our spare change to Vegas with us for the slots. And my husband has a small coin collection that he hasn't looked at in years. I told him about this blog so he could check out some info.

    ReplyDelete
  15. No U.S. penny ever had two faces on the front.

You would have to post a picture but it sounds like a altered coin. Any error would look more liking a doubling not two faces.

Value is zero, ok maybe a penny as an art piece.

  16. I just discoverd that I have both a 1918 and a 1929 wheat pennies. Both are "plain" (no S or D). Any idea if either has any value?

    ReplyDelete
  19. It doesn't sound right because that "lip" or rim would have been made on both sides at once.

Sounds like damage or someone did that on purpose. No value.

2005D pennies unless it is in a high mint state(MS-65) which is only $0.25.

Newer pennies often look great and if your a collector you may want to put a few aside but they are extremely common and only perfect ones(MS-70) that are professionally graded will have any real value.

Only on eBay, the $0.35 is the average amount you would have to pay if wanted to buy it at a coin shop. The Red Book value.

If you wanted to sell it to a coin dealer it would sell for an average of $0.15. The Blue Book value.

And also, what year of minted pennies is most valueable?
    Not counting errors.
    1909S V.D.B. is about $850.00 in fine.
    1922, No D is about
    $1,000.00 in fine.
1914D is about $350.00 in fine.

  31. ...quarter from 1941, and it feels like its made of a completely different metal...

That year quarters were made of silver. After 1965 they changed to copper-nickel.
    They are about $4.00.

If you still think it is made of something not silver then you would have to weigh it. It should weigh 6.25 grams if it is silver.

  60. Ever heard the term "throwing your money away?" I did exactly that tonight. I was cleaning out my purse. Pulled out a couple of kleenex & receipts balled up, and threw them in the trash. Noticed a penny on top. Thought, whatever, it's just a penny....feeling too lazy to bend over & pick it up. Finally did it because there are people in the world who would hold a penny close to their hearts & value it highly because it is American. Turned out to be 1909. No S or VDB, but still...I wouldn't have intentionally thrown $1.50 in the trash! From now on, I'll never assume a penny is just "worthless."

The list is too large and there are too many factors.

    A simple list...
    The higher quality the better.
    Uncirculated, untouched, luster, and details.
    Errors are great.
    Older is good.
    History is okay.

  101. 1995 D penny, color is a bit off and the rim around the penny is thicker than normal and extremely smooth. Weight of this penny is 1-2 grams less than that of a regular penny.

It could be an error penny struck from a foreign planchet I would need the exact weight since a 1995 cent weighs 2.50 grams so it can't be 2 grams less.

    ReplyDelete
  102. penny weight is actually about 2.5 grams. I was comparing it to an older penny so the weight is probably fine. When you hold it in your hand it almost feels plastic but it's not. The rim is very thick and wide.

Yes older pennies weigh more so always compare with the same year.

It sounds like a slight off center or die cap error but very minor so no extra value. It also happens if the blank coin was not balanced but still it's very common and has no extra value.

First you should pick out the ones that are high quality and the rare pieces. The rest will sell for about $0.02 or $0.03 each either on eBay or at a coin shop.

A coin book or magazine will help pick out the best because coin dealers will not search these coins for you.

  189. I came accross a penny that has the "tail" side on both sides. There isnt any trace of a "head" side on either side. There is no date- and in weight feels the same as other pennies. What is this called- why does it happen- and of course- any value?

What is a 2001 liberty coin?

I never heard of this especially not for $650,000.

A 1929 One Cent U.S. coin is common and just $0.20 in the lowest grade of "good".
