Canada Penny Find

Do you have a Canada cent and want to find out its value? Leave a comment/question and I will do my best to find out the price and history for you.

I found these two Canadian cents in my pocket change today.

This brings my found Canadian coins to 251. Most of which are not worth much. They must be in a high grade to be sold or bought by dealers.

Here's the stat for these two coins...
Year: 1966
Metal: 98% Copper, 0.5% Tin, 1.5% Zinc
Mintage: 183,644,388
Value: MS-60 $0.10 (mint state 60 out of 70)

Year: 1995
Metal:98% Copper, 0.5% Tin, 1.5% Zinc
Mintage: 624,983,000
Value: MS-60 $0.10 (mint state 60 out of 70)

The oldest Canada cent I found was from 1943 at VG-8 it's worth $0.10, at MS-63 it's $25.00. The only low grade Canadian penny that is valued high a 1955 variety at about $85.00.

Sidenote: I've been using a scanner get a picture of my coins but I think I might try my camera to get more details I never did learn how to properly use the scanner, why start now.

Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins is the best coin reference in print.

  7. Ok being so close to canada i have always gotten coins from there. So i was wondering if there was any thing special about the 1962 penny is good condition...plus what about 5cent pieces.I have one from 1968 in very-good condition.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 1962 Canada cent about $0.03.
    1968 Canada nickel about $0.10.

Most of the value now comes from the metal content but with few exceptions most pre-1955 coins are very collectible.

Also lately there are so many modern post-2000 coins it is hard to keep up with.

  10. 1955 canadian penny

    There are 2 varieties.
    1) No shoulder fold worth about $120.00 in fine.
    2) Shoulder fold worth about $0.10 in fine.

Of course it is hard to tell, with the No Shoulder Fold in the word DEI the letter I should flare a bit and point between two denticles.

In the Shoulder Fold variety it is a straight letter I pointing directly to a denticle.

  19. Hey, i have this penny (well actually like 30 of them_ that has a bird with its wings spred out. It is a frontal view. its dated 1867-1967. Could you tell me what its worth?

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1867-1967 Canadian penny

This is the Confederation Centennial cent and it is only worth $0.10 in mint state(shiny new and unmarked).

In circulated they generally sell for about $0.02-$0.03 mostly for metal content.

  21. Hello, I have a coin that is a goildish colour. On the frount it says "The coronation of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. and its from the year 1953. On the frount it also has a ER in the center with some decoration around it. Can you tell me what this coin is, and what it might be worth?

    ReplyDelete
  22. The coronation of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. and its from the year 1953. On the frount it also has a ER in the center with some decoration around it.

If it doesn't have a denomination then it is a medal of some sort. There are too many coins/medals dedicated to the Queen to narrow it down.

If you have any other words, letters or a picture/scan on the coin feel free to tell me.

The ER is from Australia or early Canadian medals. Coronation Medals is what there called and unless it is real gold they go for $20.00 or less.

A second wave of Coronation medals were issued in 2003.

  23. I have a 1916 penny & a 1867 quarter

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't know if you mean Canadian or U.S. so I'll list both.

    U.S.
1916 penny about $0.25 in good.
1867 quarter about $200.00 in good.

    Canada
1916 penny about $0.25 in good.
1867 quarter the first Canadian quarter was in 1870 so this may be an anniversary coin from 1992 worth about $0.30 in good.

  25. I've got a 1943 Canada penny, with King George IV on the reverse. There was a flaw in the minting that resulted in a bar-like dent above the King's head. How much would this be worth?

  26. 1943 Canada penny, with King George IV on the reverse. There was a flaw in the minting that resulted in a bar-like dent

This is a $0.10 coin and it sounds damaged.
Even if this is an actual flaw it would not bring any extra value over $1.00.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 1932 canadian one cent peice. In mint condition.

It is worth about $14.00 in mint-state-60 which has all details but lacks luster. If the coin has nice red shiny luster and no bag marks then it may be worth much more.

  31. hey. I have two coins with a dent in both of them. (I think this is a error not damage. It looks REALLY bad.)
As far as I know dents are damage even if made at the mint, but if you can take a picture and link it here I can be sure.

Hi. I have some 1955 pennies and I'm wondering what are shoulder folds. thx!
Assuming you are talking about Canadian pennies.
Shoulder folds are lines that run over her shoulder it was a mint decision for a design change. In worn coins it is hard to tell so what most people look for is the I in the word DEI.

The I is not flared and points to a denticle in the Shoulder fold variety.
The I is flared and points in between two denticles in the Non-Shoulder fold variety.

This is how much they are worth if you wanted to buy those coins in XF or better grade.

Selling is a different story some place only pay 3 cents for each Canadian coin and won't look for dates or varieties. Your best bet is eBay 100 Canadian coins can go for $5.00 or more.

If these coins are mint perfect expect more then $10.00.

I would and have gone through boxes of 10,000 pennies. It doesn't take that long.

That said the most valuable cent I found this way is about $0.50. So wrapping them up is no big loss. If you decide to go through them look for errors or any cent older then 1940.

  69. hi! I have a lot of pennies, small and large.

    small:
1929 to 85, skip 30,31,34,36,39,47,60, and 63. I'd say most of them are mark free, details all totally visible. the older ones of course have no shine, but the later years some are shinny, like th e 61 and the 65. I really love the 29,32, 33 and 35!

    large:
    1887, 90 (with the "h") 95, 98, 07, 08, 10, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20. the 87, 90 look really nice, not really worn at all. as the 16, 17, 19 and 20. the rest is work, but no marks.

    thank you!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I'll assume at least extra-fine condition and list all you mentioned.
Of course if they aren't as nice the price is lower.

    1887 about $20.00
    1890 about $35.00
    1895,1898 about $25.00
    1907,1908 about $9.00
    1910, about $5.00
    16, 17, about $2.50
    18, 19 and 20 about $2.25

    1929 to 85
    skip 30,31,34,36,39,47,60, and 63

    1929-1937 are about $1.50 each.
    1938 about $0.75
    1940-1944 about $0.50
    1945-1946 about $0.30
    1948 about $0.70
    1949-1953 about $0.20
1953-1955 has several varieties some worth hundreds. Read my previous comments to find out more.
    1956-1960 about 0.10
    1961-1985 about $0.03

again anything less then extra-fine drops the value by half or more.

    ReplyDelete

  93. hey yall,
    few questions
first off, im from canada, and i work at starbucks i get half my weekly tips in pennies (by choice)
as of now i have roughly 25,000 to 30,000 pennies on my floor, first i went through a few thou today whell rooling them and picked out one from every year from 1950 to 2008, worth anything? also picked out all you guy's pennies, and think i may have found a 1990 no,s penny. possibilaty? do you know of any canadian pennies that may be worth keeping? ... or will i make more money dooing a (melt down) because i probly have my weight in pennies ??

    ReplyDelete
  94. (14.25 lbs.) of uncirculated 1963 Canadian pennies

It would be about $0.03 for each coin maybe $35.00 for the lot.

As a collectible it's about $0.10 per coin and about $75.00 maybe less because you may not be able to prove they're all uncirculated during an auction.

    ReplyDelete
  95. 1950 to 2008, worth anything? also picked out all you guy's pennies, and think i may have found a 1990 no,s

The only Canadian cents from that range that are valuable are the 1954 and 1955 varieties. They are rare and are hard to identify compared to the normal 1954 and 1955.

As for melting I don't know because it's illegal in the U.S. but it would about $600.00. If you would of taken the change in nickels or quarters the value would have tripled.

As for the 1990 no-S cent form the U.S. it's just $0.01 nothing special. Unless you mean it's a proof coin then it's about $3,000.00.

    I found a 1955 Canadian penny today!
It is in average condition for its age.

I don't understand the "shoulder" distinction you wrote about in a different post. What are the chance my penny is worth more than .10? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  105. 1955 Canadian penny

The shoulder strap detail is a small change in the coins design. If you can't see a shoulder strap always look at I in the word DEI if it is flared it is the more valuable no-shoulder variety.

It is very hard to tell you may need to show an expert in person. There is a less than 1% chance that it is the rare one.

I've gone through hundreds of these types and have not found any.

    ReplyDelete
  162. "RD-63" reffer to according to Sheldon's Numerical Grading Scale

    It's for uncirculated copper coins.
    RD = red
    63 = Mint State 63

MS-70 is the highest state meaning perfect.
RD is also the best for coppers.
    RB is second meaning Red-Brown
    BN is third meaning Brown.

  172. Sorry if this is a simple question. My son has collected all Canadian pennies from 1920 to 2008. We notice some of the 2006 ones have a crown under the Queen. The same with the 2003. Some also have a "P". Can anyone tell me the significance of this?
    Thanks tons
    Cheers

All questions are welcomed and this one stumped me a few years ago.

The crown over the letter M is the Royal Canadian Mint logo they are now using it on most of there coins introduced in 2006. They have no other significance, in books they're listed as (ml) mint logo.

The P is for the Multi-Ply Plated Steel coins issued from 1999 to date it was done to save money.

  174. Is there a guide book that shows the years and values of the canadian peeny like there is in the US? Also, I take it there a no such things as mint marks on any year of the canadian penny?

  175. Is there a guide book that shows the years and values of the canadian peeny like there is in the US?

Yes it is one that I own and I'm just order the new one on Amazon.
It's the Charlton Standard Catalogue Canadian Coins 2009.
It shows every thing the U.S. guide does, mintage, and values for different grades.

I take it there a no such things as mint marks on any year of the canadian penny?

You are not correct. For example the Canadian 2000 cent has...
    2000
    2000W
    2000P

There are many mintmark, W, H, P, WP, blank, and now the (ml) Mint-Logo.

  186. Thanks for the help on the coin values. A couple more questions if I may. Where are these mint markings found on the coin? How does one safely clean up old coins? Thanks very much.

    ReplyDelete
  187. Where are these mint markings found on the coin?
To the left of the date, under the shield.
Either a small H that may be weak or a larger KN. Both are fairly rare and would average $4.00 in low grade.

If it is blank then it's the normal type.

How does one safely clean up old coins?
If grading is your goal then no cleaning is safe.
But if you just want to get the surface dirt of a dip in pure acetone(not nail polish remover) followed by rinse in distilled water is the safest.

Also some people use a 90% isopropyl alcohol and distilled water. With non-US coins it's hard to say and maybe test with low grades first.

1948 did not have shoulders so that is not possible.

It does have a variety, if the denticles are small it's about $30.00.

If the denticles are large it's about $4.00.
