The 1947 wheat penny is very common and even in near perfect condition it is not worth much. Near perfect meaning a full red bright color, not scratched and with full sharp details.
They came in three mint marks located under the date D=Denver, S=San Francisco or blank=Philadelphia
These two 1947D cent are AG-3(about good)

ReplyDeleteGrease on the die causes a blank spot to appear on the design it is more common then most people think.
An average 1944 is worth $0.10 a missing 1 may bring the price to $0.20 .

I have a 1956 Penny that appears to be an error from the mint. I have had this penny for about 15 years. I used to have a coin book that had this exact penny in the book but lost the book and havent found another book with it listed. When I first saw it it looked like a clipped error. But on closer look it seems someone shaved the edge.

ReplyDeleteMost likely a fake because if one side is pressed the other side must also be pressed.
First check if the reverse has a rim, if so it may be real.
Second the reverse should not be smooth it should be wavy or have a ghost image of either the front or back design.
Third it should weigh 3.11 grams.
If smooth and underweight it is a fake done by grinding off the back.

The 1944 one has a little smudge so if you don't look closely it looks like
UN(*smudge IT, and some of E*)D
Also have some canadian old coins.
2 of them have errors.
One looks like it's bended and on the other side (back) it looks like

About $15.00 in MS-60.

ReplyDeleteQuality wasn't the best as they tried to use dies beyond their limits.
So common were the die breaks around the 1950s and the word LIBERTY that the BIE Guild was formed.
Eventually too many errors were found and the price fell to just a little above face. The guild and there books closed.
Still a nice retained cud can bring a dollar or more.
Modern coins suffer from bubbles, plating variations and die cracks.
Oh almost forgot, as for selling them it would be difficult as most of these errors are very common.

The actual grade maybe MS-65 which would be about $2.00.
If it were MS-68 it would be about $200.00 or more. The market is very unstable on these grades. PCGS has one MS-68 listed at $14,500.00 but they tend to be high.

ReplyDeleteAssuming it is real it has to be certified by an expert if it weighs 3.11 grams you can be sure it's fake.
The reason to fake an error is because if this is real then it may be worth thousand of dollar since other silver pennies have been found. Most were accidentally made with silver dimes or foreign blanks.

ReplyDeleteIt sounds like an error called Brockage. When the coin is struck by a second coin, it is about $40.00
But it may also be a double struck coin which is worth much less or even have no extra value.
You need an expert or a coin dealer to tell the difference.
I was going through my large penny collection (I say collection, more like piggy bank lol) and I found a 1947 Wheat Penny. But the thing is, the 4 is a bit higher then the other numbers. Does that make it fake?

Maybe about $0.50 if you can get expert to say what type but for the average collector it's only about $0.03.

It's in medium to low grade I would say it's about $450.00 but it needs to be graded.
The last I saw was an MS-64 and did not have a flipover strike, it sells for about $700.00

Look for anything that looks red, shiny and new.
Look for anything that might be an error.
Look for these key dates:
1909, 1909S, 1910S, 1911S, 1912S, 1913S, 1914S, 1915S, 1922, 1924D, 1931S.
If you don't wish to collect one of each for an album and prefer to sell the none key dates expect to get about 3 cents per coin from dealers less in certain areas.

That is very good since most MS-65 1955 cents sell for $1.00 or less. If it is a double-die they sell for much more.

ReplyDeleteThis is an advertising on money which is damage and has no extra value. This is probably a place that no longer exist in your area. The best I can say is try looking up old library maps and books that had this address in 1947. The internet will not help in this kind of search.
The only way it will have value if the clothing store became famous or was historically significant.

Fake silver-plated weighs about 2.50 grams.
Off-Metal Error - weight is anything but 2.50 grams.
Missing Clad Layer error - weighs slightly less than 2.50 grams.
Only the final two have value.

Either way it has no extra value, about $0.03.

I have a gold Indian Head Type 2 and 1/2 dollar piece that has a diameter of 21.6mm, a weight of 8.359 grams, a composition of 90% gold, 10% copper, and a reeded edge. Its date is 1908, no mint mark, but it has a small inscription under the head B. L. P. or just B.L.P. . It seems to be in uncirculated condition, since it is in a case that fits it perfectly, and it has no tarnish or stuff on it. From the human eye, it has perfect detail but under a microscope and a magnification of 35x there are very tiny indents that could be a mint error or could be because of just shaking a little bit in its case. Any way it is in very good condition and it's year is 1908, the case does not signify that it is proof or uncirculated but it looks excately like proof cases and maybe the sticker or plaque thing fell off. I have a 1998 United States Coin Prices book but since it is over ten years ago I don't know if its accurate. Could you tell me the value/ if uncirculated or proof or not about this coin?

That said the sandblasting happened after minting and the indents sound right.
Check the rim it maybe "slightly wavy" or not even.
These proof have been faked but yours sound legit.
It would be $8,000.00 about $,750 if not a proof.
While gold proofs have been heavily studied I'm no expert even in hand, it should be graded.

There are 3 varieties:
Indian head 1909S is about $1,300.00
Lincoln head 1909S is about $500.00

I have a 1947 with a few bag marks. There is no wear on the coin. The cheek, jaw, and stalks look perfect. The strange thing is the color of this coin looks like the new 2009 cent, bright and shiny. I suspected someone cleaned it, but there is no evidence of that. My question is should I have this coin graded, and what is the value.
ReplyDelete1947 with a few bag marks. There is no wear on the coin. The cheek, jaw, and stalks look perfect. The strange thing is the color of this coin looks like the new 2009 cent, bright and shiny. I suspected someone cleaned it, but there is no evidence of that.
ReplyDeleteLet's assume it grades MS-65 then it would be $4.00.
Higher than MS-66 or higher will be worth the price to grade but if cleaned then it's just a cent.
I suggest you have someone look at it before you submit or get a microscope and a grading book.

ReplyDeleteThe error sounds like a Cud which is about $5.00.
But it also sounds like damage, no extra value.
It should be weighed and if possible use a free photo site to upload a picture and drop a link.
I have a 1949 Wheat Penny, but is has a separate copper rim attached to it. It makes the penny a bit larger than a normal penny. Part of it is peeled back and it looks like it could be pulled off without much effort. Any idea what this extra rim might be about?

Mintmark doubling for this coin is about $1.00.
1977 Lucky 7 Leaf Penny Hair
ReplyDeleteI have seen a 1969 double struck cent, I have seen broadstrikes,
off-metals and off-centres coins. I have seen Double overlap and
partial brockages , underlap and overlaps. edge variable but I have never
seen anything like this before. The actual leaf is off and reappears on the
reverse in the Queen's hair. The missing leaf reveals the back leaf which is
always hidden , for the first time in my life I have seen the back of the hidden
leaf and so have you now also seen it for the first time. It looks perfect!
not just a portion of the leaf is missing , 1/2 or 3/4 but the whole part of the
leaf! . So I have seen the Devils hair and I am calling this one the.....

I've never heard of this specific coin but I would guess it should be about $5.00 if a Die Clash.
Maybe more if proven to be a Double Struck.
Let me tell you Mr Man about why this type of error is unique beside the tricky stunt

to print partial of the leaf on the reverse and ended up striking it on the observe that is now being offered for over$50k .(PS on your $5 dollar offer. if you find onesimilar to this I will pay you 10K , e-mail me ok:) thanks:)
Really most overflipped double striked coin out there are common to see or
were, the observe is printed and so is the reverse + that reverse or observe then printed
on that opposite side showing then 2 sides on one, but partial print missing
and an overflip and struck on reverse is very uncommon or unheard of and
this partial missing print is the leaf which ended up in the Queen'shair + that
number 7 from the reverse date of 1977 for a total of three 7's and most of
us knows the definition of that meaning...lucky 7's. But then again overflip
or broadstuck coins , clips and off centres, double strikes , off-planchets(such
as 1 cent design on a quarter cent blank ) coins struck on foreigh blanks or
double denominations ( like a 10 cent design on a already struck 1 cent coin )
those types were error types a thing of the past after 1971 when the Winnipeg
plant opened his doors. The minting press had a new state-of-the-Art Press
whose feeding striking and ejection mechanisms made some error types obsolete.
The new presses, unfortunately for the error collector, eliminated a lot of errors
because the mechanical finger-feed mechanism was replaced by a 12coin
feeder that looked like the cylinder of a Smith & Wesson and you know what
that means. The sides of the chambers of the 12 coin feeders were designed
so that blanks could no longer jump out of their slots easily and cause
overlappingin the striking chamber to create brokerage. Again off-centres
became very scarce (R-4 = 76 to 200 examples )if not rare ( R-5 = 31 to 75 examples )
so after 1971 , 1972 and moving forward, the only errors advertised lately
are die varieties struck in some quantity , variations resulting from different
blank compositions, changes to the Mint logo ( with or without the "W" or the
" circle M " logo. or , most involving the two pieces of the $2 coins that overlapped
eachother. How accurate are my comments about the scarcity of Winnipeg-produced
errors? Well, have you seen a lot of errors lately?, other than the $2 coins?
Today , The Mint strikes all circulation coins in Winnipeg with excellent equipment
that has very sophisticated feeding and ejection mechanism.
The human inspectors were replaced by electronic inspection
equipment, which doesn't take coffee breaks and isn't distracted by
nearby employees. So here you have it, a 1977 Canada Lucky 7 Leaf hair Penny or
the " Pennache ".
As I stated a Double Struck would be worth more it would be $500.00 or more but with nothing to compare it to it is unique but not necessarily extremely valuable.

Remember everyone an easy way to be sure of what type of error you may have is to submit it for grading.

ReplyDeleteThere are a variety of methods depending on the coin and the "stuff" but the most well known is acetone dips and distilled water cleaning.
Join any large coin forum and there you will see dozens of methods.

If the are older or obselete notes then uyou can sell them on eBay to collectors.
found a weird wheat penny. i know that the 1947 isnt very rare or valuable, but in fact very common. but i found i have one give to me by a friend that happens to be "encased" in a token. the front side gives a couple of date and the top says in big letters, "VICTORY" and the bottom in small letters says world peace. the back side says Wm. Y. Gilmore & sons and on the very bottom says oak park. if you could help that would be great. i have no idea and i am a coin collector as well but have never in my years come across this particular "token/coin". thanks a lot.

ReplyDeleteNot a token it is a souvenir from the Gilmore store in Oak Park, Illinois. It closed by 1976 so there is not a great deal online.
It is more likely a WWII historical item but I know little to nothing.

This is beyond my knowledge but if I would start research I would contact Oak Park based coin shops or clubs.

ReplyDeleteWorld War I, this is just theory but by 1915 the world was at war. Copper was going through huge price fluctuations and it was more profitable to sell copper than make coins. USA did not join the war until 1917 and by that time we were hoarding which why it went from 29 million to 131 million to 196 million.
After looking through many rolls of pennies, I came across a 1969S. When I examined it under the magnifying glass, and then with a 100x electric magnifier hooked to my LCD screen, I see a lot of doubling. Mostly in "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and in the date. The 's' looks clear, though...

ReplyDeleteUnless it has a little "S" under the date it is not proof. Probably a high grade coin, "proof-like" it would have extra value maybe $10.00 if graded MS-69 or 70.
