2009 Late Arrivals

Do you have a dime and want to know its value? Leave a comment

As some may know 2009 was a low coin production year. That meant that finding some coins has been difficult, dimes and nickels in particular. While even lower minted quarters have been popping up without much looking.

Then suddenly last week three 2009 dimes just showed up in my change.

2009-P Dime

2009-P Northern Mariana Islands Quarter

The Denver dimes actually had a lower circulation but Denver coins are always more of a hassle to find in the east coast.  Now the quarter is actually the lowest minted quarter in years but it is one of six designs which tends to lower the productions anyway.

People were hoarding 2009 dimes and nickels  because of  low mintage. But these quarters and certain dollar coins had a lower mintage and they were not so highly publicized.

Here's the stats...
Type/Country: 10 Cents / United States
Year: 2009 P
Mintage: 96,500,000
Metal: 91.67% Copper, 8.33% Nickel
Value: $0.10

Type/Country: 25 Cents-Northern Mariana Islands / United States
Year: 2009 P
Mintage: 35,200,000
Metal: 91.67% Copper 8.33% Nickel
Value: $0.25 in F-12

Not counting the half dollars, since they are not officially circulating, the lowest minted coin for 2009 was the Native American Dollar at 33,880,000. The Northern Mariana Islands quarter is the second lowest.

Ok Canada we're still friends

Do you have Canadian cent and want to know its value? Leave a comment

I think this is the oldest Canadian, and foreign, coin I have ever plucked out of my change.

It is in remarkably good shape there is some gunk between the letters but nothing too damaging.

Type/Country: 1 Cent / Canada
Year: 1921
Mintage: 7,601,627
Metal: 95.5% Copper, 3% Tin, 1.5% Zinc
Value: $1.00 in VG

If only a year later, 1922, it would be worth $20.00 but still a great find.

Nothing special but since I had a free minute here is what I found.

MAD Money

I got no idea where this bank stamp was from but it fit my mood. It may not even be a real bank stamp but it did make me smile.

Common Canada - Uncommon Barbados

Do you have any world coins and want to know its value? Leave a comment

I thought that I found more Barbados coins but a quick search of my recent records proved otherwise. This is only the second coin from Barbados I found since starting this blog. I guess in my mind I group all the Caribbean coins together.

Still none of these coins are rare but the grouping was odd. I got them in  change from the same place, from a person who knew I collected and graciously set them aside.

Here are the stats for this...
Type/Country: 1 Cent / Barbados
Year: 1980
Mintages: 14,400,000
Metal: Bronze
Value: $0.10 in XF

Type/Country: 1 Cent / Canada
Year: 1978
Mintage: 911,170,647
Metal: 98% Copper, 0.5% Tin, and 1.5% Zinc
Value: $0.02 in F

Type/Country: 1 Cent / Canada
Year: 2009 RCM Logo
Mintage: 419,105,000
Metal: 94% Steel, 4.5% Copper, and 1.5% Nickel

Progressive Consortium

Do you have an odd note and want to know its value? Leave a comment

I've talked about those stamps you occasionally see on paper money. And I found a few but none that were very interesting until this one. It is large and just writing, no cartoons.

Can't quite make out the stamp? Well let me spell it out for you.
PROGRESSIVE GROCERS OF
JAMAICA LIMITED
WESTGATE

Apparently Progressive Grocers is a consortium of big shots in the food retail and related industry who go around the world buying up local grocery stores and chains based on research about new markets.
Yeah, sounds ominous.

Jamaica Limited, based in Jamaica, is a particular off-shoot of the parent company Progressive Grocers, I have forgotten everything I learned last semester about limited liability companies so do a Bing search if you want.

Westgate is a community once known for its Shoppers Fair supermarket until the consortium came into town. This all happened back in February of 2000.

I assume that this bill was used or exchanged at this Jamaican store, got stamped to verify authenticity, then used again probably by a bank, maybe by a Jamaican-New Yorker who then came to NYC and used it again until I got it.

Of course no extra value but an interesting trip/story.
